The goal of a new study published in the Irish Journal of Medical Science was to provide a long-term analysis of efficacy and patients satisfaction for the transanal hemorrhoidal artery ligation and mucopexy (THD) procedure, with respect to the presenting symptoms and degree of hemorrhoids. This prospective study included all patients who underwent THD between 2011 and 2016, in the assessment for postoperative complications, symptoms pre- and postoperatively and patients satisfaction rating. Among the 256 participants, 46.5% were males and 53.5% were females, belonging to the age-group of 17-82 years. The follow-up results showed no recurrence in 84.0% patients; in contrast, 16.0% required further treatment. On the other hand, a statistically significant higher recurrence was noted in patients with grade-3 and -4 hemorrhoids and per-rectal bleeding, whereas there was no statistically significant recurrence for age, gender, sedentary lifestyle and constipation or pruritus. Moreover, 87.5% patients were completely satisfied with the procedure. Thus, it was inferred that THD is a comparably pain-free procedure with improved results, higher long-term satisfaction, minimal recurrence, and fewer complications, in comparison to other surgical modalities.3
