Another new variant of the coronavirus has been detected in the UK with certainpotentially concerning mutations.

Identified as B.1.525, the variant appears to be similar to the SouthAfrican variant. Researchers at the Edinburgh University have detected 38 casesof the variant thus far, including 2 cases in Wales and 36 in England. Thesamples date back to December. It has also been identified in other countries, including Denmark, Nigeria and the US.

It seems to be too early to say if the variant should be added to theUKs list of "variants of concern" and if mass testing needs to beinitiated. Currently, it is a "variant under investigation"… (BBC,February 16, 2021)
