Cough Update: Dextromethorphan

An article published in StatPearls reportedthat dextromethorphan– approved by the FDA as a cough suppressant, is one of the most commoncompounds found in majority of the over-the-counter antitussives. In 2010, theFDA approved the use of this dug in for pseudobulbar affect (PBA) incombination with quinidine.

Moreover, many otherpotential therapeutic uses for dextromethorphan—as a neuroprotective agent—arecurrently under investigation. Other potential indications of this agentinclude:

·                    Depression – a fast-acting antidepressant activity

·                    Stroke – improvement of some neurological andpsychiatric complications

·                    Traumatic Brain Injury – benefits owing to itsactivity at NMDA and sigma-1 receptors

·                    Seizure – efficacy in refractory seizures

·                    Pain – analgesic effects for pain conditions suchas cancer-related, post-operative, neuropathic and gastrointestinal pain

·                    Methotrexate Neurotoxicity – resolution ofneurologic deficits associated with methotrexate toxicity

·                    Parkinsons Disease

·                    Autism – role in behavioral improvement
