Drugs for Cough – Guaifenesin

Anarticle published in The Medical Letter on Drugs andTherapeutics stated that the expectorant – guaifenesin increases the volume ofsecretions in the respiratory tract, by facilitating removal of viscous mucusby coughing. 

Guaifenesin is available by prescription in combination with an opioid,and OTC, both alone and in combination preparations. Guaifenesinextended-release tablets can only be used in children above the age of 12years. The drug is generally considered safe in recommended doses. In addition,dextromethorphan and Guaifenesin combination has been approved by the US FDAfor treatment of cough.
