France enters third national lockdown amid surge in COVID-19 cases

France is in its third national lockdown as the country fights a spike in COVID-19 cases that threatens to overwhelm the hospitals.

All schools and non-essential shops will remain closed for four weeks, with a curfew imposed from 19:00 to 06:00. Friday saw the number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients in intensive care units (ICU) rising by 145, representing the biggest surge in five months. The country is grappling with a peak of about 5,000 COVID patients in ICUs and is facing an EU-wide delay in the vaccine rollout, besides several new strains of the virus.

Besides other restrictions, from Tuesday, people will also require a valid reason to travel more than 10 km from their homes… (BBC, April 4, 2021)
