Amid increasing inequalities in access, cesarean section rates soar, says WHO

A new World Health Organization (WHO) research has shown that cesarean section use is increasing worldwide and currently accounts for over 1 in 5 of all childbirths (21%). 

The numbers are expected to show a continued increase over the coming decade, with cesarean section likely to account for around 29% of all births by 2030, suggests the research. While a cesarean section can be a lifesaving surgery, but it can also raise the risk of short- and long-term health issues for women and babies, if carried out when there seems to be no medical need.

Additionally, major disparities have been noted in a woman’s access to a cesarean section globally, based on where she lives. For instance, in the least developed countries, nearly 8% women gave birth by cesarean section with a mere 5% in sub-Saharan Africa.
