Third wave in India not likely to affect children disproportionately, suggests seroprevalence study

A likely third wave of COVID-19 pandemic in India is not likely to have a disproportionate impact on children compared to adults, suggests a seroprevalence study conducted among children and adolescents 2-17 years of age between March 15 and June 10 by the WHO and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The study noted the sero-prevalence as 55.7% in those aged below 18 years while it was 63.5% among those aged 18 years and above. A pre-print of the study published in medRxiv stated that sero-positivity rate of SARS-CoV-2 among children was high and appeared to be comparable to adults. The study also noted that rural areas had lower sero-positivity in comparison with urban areas… (ET Healthworld – TNN, June 18, 2021)
