No revision in masking guidance despite surge in Delta variant cases in U.S.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has made no changes in its masking guidance, despite the surge in the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 in the country causing a rise in cases, stated CDC director Rochelle Walensky.

The guidance was relaxed by the agency in May allowing fully vaccinated individuals not to wear masks in most public spaces. Walensky’s comments come at a time when there are reports that officials are discussing whether to revise the guidance about masking, considering outbreaks driven by the Delta variant.

Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said that the decision would be made by the CDC, while U.S. President Joe Biden stated that experts were assessing any necessary changes… (Reuters, July 22, 2021)
