Periorbital hyperpigmentation (POH), periocular hyperpigmentation, periorbital melanosis, dark circles, infraorbital darkening, infraorbital discoloration or idiopathic cutaneous hyperchromia of the orbital region presents as bilateral round or semicircular homogenous brown or dark brown pigmented macules in the periocular region. It can impose a major aesthetic concern among patients.

POH can be transient, and data relating to its incidence and prevalence is scarce. It has been found that among Indians, it usually affects youngsters and adolescents, and also shows a female preponderance.

Numerous naturally obtained actives have been successfully used as topical treatments for POH; Other techniques, such as – blepharoplasty, carboxytherapy, calcium hydroxylapatite fillers, tear trough implant, Q-switched ruby laser, intense pulsed light and radiofrequency have also been evaluated and reported to be beneficial in the treatment of POH. Yet, the use of topical depigmenting agents is the most widely reported method in the clinical management of POH. Combination products comprising various phytonutrients exhibit better results than single active containing products.
