On Thursday, the central government stated that they will provide cervical cancer vaccines for girls between the ages of 9 and 14 through schools. The government asked the states and UT′s to start collating data on the number of girls enrolled in classes 5 to 10 in each district to create awareness of prevention and the importance of the HPV vaccine.

According to the Ministry of Education, the registration, recording, and reporting of vaccination numbers will be done via the U-WIN App. In a joint letter written by Education Secretary Dr. Sanjay Kumar and Health Secretary Dr. Rajesh Bhushan to the United States, they highlighted that cervical cancer was the second most common cancer and contributed to the largest proportion of the global cervical cancer burden.

They stated that cervical cancer is a preventable and curable disease, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively. They pointed out that prevention through vaccination is one of the pillars of the global strategy adopted by the WHO for the elimination of cervical cancer.

The National Technical Advisory Group for Immunization (NTAGI) recommended the introduction of the HPV vaccine in the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) with a one-time catch-up for 9–14-year-old adolescent girls, followed by routine introduction at 9 years. The group asked the states and UT′s to issue mandatory directives for completing the campaign successfully. The aim of the campaign includes organizing HPV vaccination centers in schools and generating awareness among parents through special Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) meetings.
