According to a study published in the Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, studying unique patterns of blood plasma proteins in critically ill patients can help in developing a personalized approach to treating severe COVID-19. In the study, researchers used the "plasma proteome," which is released by cells during the body′s immune response to viruses.

The researchers took blood samples from 30 subjects in three patient groups at the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC). Patients with COVID-19 were in one group, patients with severe infection but no COVID-19 were in another, and a healthy control group was in the third. The plasma proteome analysis assisted researchers in determining which cells in the body are active during the disease state and which signaling pathways were activated.

On analyzing the blood samples, the researchers discovered that COVID-19 patients had changes in immunosuppression pathways, which normally keep the immune system in balance. They observed that the changes were heightened in critically ill patients.
