According to a new study conducted by researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College, the new atlas map can help researchers and clinicians understand what happens when cells become cancerous or are treated with specific drugs. The new atlas maps more than 300 protein kinases and the types of substrates they target.

The researchers noted that the map can be used to identify the protein kinase responsible for cellular malfunction and cancer development. This can help in developing new therapeutic targets. However, they are unsure about the cellular pathways in which these kinases are involved. The lead author of the study noted that there is a lot of sequencing data for cancer genomes, but the data for signaling pathways and protein kinase activation states in cancer are missing.

Hence, he concluded that with the use of this knowledge, researchers may be able to better understand cellular signaling networks and determine what happens to them when cells develop cancer or are exposed to particular medications.
