According to several studies, it has been observed that more than 71% of people with COVID required medical treatment or were unable to work for six months or more. These studies also showed that approximately 18% of patients, the majority of whom were under 60, had still not started working more than a year after contracting the virus.

Another study published in Nature Reviews revealed that at least 65 million people are thought to have long CVs. The researchers of the study revealed that this condition was diagnosed in more than 10% of the 651 million COVID cases reported globally. Another study last month cautioned that COVID-19 patients have a higher risk of death for at least 18 months after contracting the infection.

According to the study of nearly 160,000 participants published in Cardiovascular Research, a journal of the European Society of Cardiology, COVID patients were more likely to develop several cardiovascular conditions compared to participants who werent infected, which may have contributed to their higher risks of death (ESC).

Additionally, this study also showed that in the first three weeks after infection, COVID-19 patients had a death risk that was up to 81 times higher than that of healthy people, and that risk remained five times higher up to 18 months later.

In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a standardized clinical case definition of long-term COVID, but experts claim that diagnosis of the condition is still difficult. Furthermore, the majority of Asian nations do not keep track of the number of long-term COVID patients. Hence, several experts have revealed that vaccination is the best defense against long-term COVID.
