According to a report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), increasing physical activity can save lives and save billions of euros in health care costs.

The report stated that by 2050, increasing physical activity to the minimal level advised by the WHO can prevent 11.5 million new cases of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), thereby averting thousands of needless deaths and reducing yearly health care spending. According to the study, if people adhere to the WHO standard of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical exercise each week, it can avert nearly 10,000 premature deaths in the area each year.

Additionally, the report also showed that 45% of the respondents did not engage in an acceptable level of physical activity. The highest burden of insufficient physical activity on regional health care spending was observed in Germany, Italy, and France.
