According to a study published online May 18, 2018 in the journal Gut, postendoscopic infections are more common than thought to be, though the risk is lower with screening colonoscopy compared to diagnostic endoscopic procedures. Predictors of infection included recent history of hospitalization or endoscopic procedure; concurrence with another endoscopic procedure; low procedure volume or non-freestanding ambulatory surgery centres; younger or older age; black or Native American race and male sex.
