Among COVID-HIT countries, India positions at 9th spot as cases cross 1.6 lakh

India’s COVID-19 cases count has crossed the 1.6 lakh mark, with new cases rising to another single-day spike of 6,926 on Thursday. The death count also continued to rise, as 177 fatalities were recorded during the day, the third highest number till now. India has climbed to the 9th position among countries with the highest coronavirus caseloads. According to the Johns Hopkins Hospital website, India has overtaken Turkey (1, 60,979 cases),

India’s total case count reached at 1, 61,067, with 4,708 deaths. According to the data from state governments almost 70,900 people have recovered from the infection. Maharashtra continued to add the highest number of cases — 2,598 on Thursday with Mumbai alone reporting 1,467 cases. Several other states also reported a huge spike in coronavirus cases. The states that reported their highest single-day count were Delhi (1,024 cases), Bengal (344 cases), Telangana (158 cases), Haryana (123 cases) and Kerala (84 cases). Also, Tamil Nadu (827 cases), Gujarat (367 cases), Andhra Pradesh (128 cases), J&K (115 cases) and Assam (82 cases) were the other states where the new cases continued.

On Thursday, Maharashtra’s COVID-19 count has reached to 59,546 and is crawling very close to the 60,000 mark. The state also reported 85 coronavirus deaths, its third highest count for a single day. The total number of deaths in Maharashtra has reached 1,982. Tamil Nadu too recorded 12 deaths, its highest single-day count with 827 fresh cases of COVID-19. Out of them, 117 were migrants who came by air and rail, taking the total tally to 19,372. The number of new cases in UP on Thursday was 2,758 whereas it was 2,173 on 21st May, a surge of almost 21.2% in 7 days.
