The only survivor of a shipwreck was brought to a small, uninhabited island by the ocean waves. He prayed for God to rescue him, and every day he would look at the horizon for help, but no help seemed to come. Exhausted, he built a little hut out of driftwood to protect himself, and to store his few possessions. One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find the little hut in flames, smoke rolling up to the sky.
The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. "God, how could you do this to me!" he cried. Early next day he woke up to the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the exhausted man. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied.
It is very easy to get discouraged and lose hope when things are going bad. But we shouldn’t lose heart, because God is at work at all times, even in the midst of our pain and suffering.
Remember, the next time you see your little hut burning, it might just be a smoke signal that invites the grace of God.
