Doctors from government and private hospitals have opposed the notification of Central Council for Indian Medicine’s (under the Union ministry of Ayush) to legitimise ‘mixopathy’ (i.e. mixing of allopathy with homeopathy and Ayurveda), which will permit Ayurveda postgraduates to perform surgical procedures.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) is considering introducing an integrated MBBS medical curriculum by substituting the present system and therefore has set up committees regarding this matter.

Doctors from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) throughout India have observed a ‘pledge day’ on Wednesday against this notification. They had protested on AMC-KGH premises also, stating that a doctor who has completed his post-graduation in surgery also cannot perform all surgeries. He must complete a three-year-long super specialty course.

Any order that allows untrained herbal medicine practitioners to conduct surgeries is aproblem that can affect medical systems and public health. A PG medical student said that if the government wants to improve public health, then they should first improve infrastructure and increase the GDP allocation for health but don’t give a knife to an untrained person.

Dr MV Vijayasekhar, Neurosurgeon, Central Working Committee member (CWC) of IMA said that they are not against Ayurveda or Indian system of medicines but are against mixing it with allopathic systems. The government should encourage Ayush medicines by setting up Ayurvedic colleges and hospitals and provide employment but Ayurveda should not invade in modern medical surgeries and vice versa. Allowing Ayurvedic graduates to perform cataract surgery or skin grafting or any other procedures should be undertaken only by super specialists.
