Moderna applies for U.S. authorization for COVID vaccine booster

Moderna Inc has sought U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorization for the use of a booster dose of its COVID-19 vaccine.

Booster doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine are being considered by the FDA, but the agency has thus far allowed only individuals with weak immune systems to receive the booster doses of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. The agency stated that some advisers are set to meet on September 17 to discuss Pfizer booster shot application; however, it is not known if the Moderna booster dose will be discussed.

Moderna had stated that it submitted early data for the use of a 50 microgram booster dose of its two-dose vaccine, and that the individuals who had received the 50 microgram dose developed strong antibody responses against the Delta variant of coronavirus… (Reuters, September 2, 2021)
