Emerging evidence suggest that dysfunctional mitochondria have a primary role in the development of CKD as well as in comorbidities related to CKD and underline their role as new therapeutic targets. Our understanding is still quite immature.

Mitochondria-directed therapies have the potential for prevention and management of renal diseases.
