Role of Private Sector and IAP

  1. Role of IAP in child health - The mission is to achieve optimum growth, development and health in the physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual realms Private healthcare in India costs about 4 times more than the public sector, yet majority of cases are treated by the private sector.
  2. Among the BRICS and other newly industrialized nations, India spends the least on health per capita.
  3. Role of Govt. in making private sector care better - Subsidizing the private sector by releasing prime building land at low rates (as long as a quarter of patients are treated free - a condition that is rarely met); exemptions from taxes and duties for importing drugs and high-tech medical equipment; concession to doctors setting up private practices and nursing homes; training the doctors and other staff at a lower price.
  4. Role of medical colleges - Medical colleges can support by providing healthcare at subsidized prices, training more medical staff, providing better patient care.
  5. IAP-Immunize India - This is an initiative where parents can register their child by sending an SMS with the child’s name and date of birth. It is the world’s largest vaccination reminder service.
  6. IAP Touch - “IAP’s Training of Untrained Child Healthworkers:” In India, private healthcare plays a major role where many of the centers are run by semi-skilled or unskilled paramedic staff. This project aims at training the staff for the betterment of the services. This projects aims to orient staff to pediatric nursing skills; give them hands on training; to help in reduction in IMR, NMR and under 5 mortality rate and childhood morbidities; to strengthen the implementation of national health policies; to prepare SOP in Indian context; to act as a model for replication in other specialties.
  7. Gaaon ki baat, IAP ke sath - Under this initiative, each IAP branch adopts a village with the aim that every child should attain the best possible health and well-being. The initiative has a holistic approach involving education, communication, awareness, community participation, intersectoral coordination, promoting evidence-based low cost interventions.
  8. IAP HealthPhone program is the world’s largest digital mass education program with focus on mother and child malnutrition. The IAP public private partnership initiative aims to educate over 6 million girls and women between 13 and 35 years of age and their families on better health and nutrition. It includes Poshan (nutritional videos) series in 18 Indian languages. IAP-Television will be installed in the waiting rooms of 25,000 pediatricians affiliated to IAP to create maternal and child health awareness across the country. This transformative program will educate 150 million women and around 100 million mothers-in-law and husbands on best health practices over 5 years.
  9. Future plans for better health - Combined efforts with private and Govt. sector will provide better healthcare for the children.
