Clinical Conditions You can not Afford Missing in Infancy

  1. Clinical conditions like congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), inborn errors of CCHD have to be diagnosed by 2 days of age, failing which immediate death occurs.
  2. Neonate may die of classic severe form of CAH, if treatment is not started by 10th day of life. If eye/ear abnormalities are not corrected by 2-6 months, their function cannot be reverted to normalcy.
  3. Treatment of cretinism has to be started by 15 days to avoid physical and mental retardation. Diagnosis of IEM shall be made at the earliest to prevent complications.
  4. Clinicians shall have an eagle’s eye to pick up such conditions in neonatal period/ infancy, screen them and institute interventions to prevent fatalities/morbidity in later life.
