Renal Histology: Immunofluorescence and Immunohistochemistry

  1265 Views

Prof Vinita Agrawal, Lucknow    28 December 2018

Immunofluorescence (IF) is indispensable for renal biopsy evaluation and should be a routine for all renal biopsies. The pattern and type of staining provides good information about diagnosis of renal diseases. Paraffin IF can be useful where tissue for IF is not sent separately. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is indicated in renal biopsies based on diagnosis/differential diagnosis, e.g., amyloid typing, PLA2R, collagen, DNAJB9, SV40, etc. If indicated, IHC can be done on tissue sent for IF using appropriate protocol. Tissue for IF should be processed appropriately for proper interpretation. Newer IF/IHC markers are available for diagnosis and classification of renal diseases.
