Resident doctors at the Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, called off their strike on Monday evening after authorities accepted their demand of increasing security in and around the hospital’s premises.

This was announced after the Additional Secretary at the Health Ministry, Sanjeeva Kumar, held a meeting with the hospital’s administrative officers and a delegation of resident doctors.

Resident doctors of the hospital had gone on a strike after one of their colleagues was allegedly manhandled by a Delhi Police head constable’s son, who had visited the medical institution for treatment.

Reportedly, in the meeting it was decided that as an interim arrangement, 18 marshals will be deployed at the hospital premises. Also, a proposal for the permission to deploy 30 extra marshals will be submitted to the ministry. Meanwhile, 100 security guards from the SSB will be recruited immediately. A committee will be formed, which within two weeks’ time will conduct an assessment on the number of security guards and marshals required in the hospital premises, before the report is submitted to the ministry.

The incident which took place on Monday morning, left one doctor with injuries on his nose and face. A police complaint was later registered to record the occurrence. The patient, Akshay, had allegedly gone to the emergency department after complaining of a stomach ache. Subsequently, a scuffle broke out between him and the doctors, over the suggested treatment.
