NEW DELHI: A 52-year-old female doctor, a consultant radiologist at Delhi’s RML Hospital, allegedly committed suicide at her North Avenue home on Wednesday. Police recovered a suicide note from the spot in which Dr Poonam Vohra alleged that she had been harassed by three of her colleagues.

Her husband and children had gone out and later found the house locked from inside. They alerted the police who rushed to the spot at 1 pm and broke in. The doctor was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room. She had taken the day off from work.

The police claimed that Vohra was conducting a disciplinary inquiry against the three doctors, whose names were mentioned in the note. The three doctors had humiliated and harassed her, which forced her to commit suicide.

The three doctors, whose names are mentioned in the note, will be asked to join the investigation and senior officials from the hospital are also being interviewed as part of the probe. A forensic team also visited the house to collect evidence.

DCP (New Delhi), Madhur Verma, said that the police had started an investigation into the incident. An inquest has been launched and an FIR under section 306 (abetment to suicide) could be registered if the note and the allegations made therein are confirmed.

The investigation, thus far, has revealed that the incident came to light when Dr Vohra’s family members returned to the house and found it locked from inside. They tried to call her several times but she did not respond. Even repeated knocks on the door were not answered after which cops were called. The family members have recorded their statements and it is being probed if she was suffering from stress or depression.

The doctor’s body had been moved to the mortuary and the exact cause of death would be determined following an autopsy. Her mobile phone has been seized and the content is being analyzed.
