Delhi High Court asks Centre and Delhi Govt. to frame rare disease policy

Delhi high court on Friday told the Centre and AAP government to swiftly roll out a comprehensive rare disease treatment policy. Justice Manmohan also grilled the Union health secretary, who was present in court, on the manner in which the government had backtracked and withdrawn its earlier policy despite giving an undertaking in court. During Friday’s hearing, Justice Manmohan reminded the secretary and the government that it is a “constitutional obligation” to have the policy in place so that poor patients suffering from a rare disease can receive medical care. HC was unhappy that despite the last policy being vetted by several expert committees and receiving clearances at the highest level, it was suddenly discarded… (TOI, Feb. 9, 2019)
