Flu-like Illness can trigger paralysis in the first 30 days

North India is facing a near flu epidemic.

Heart patients, diabetics and patients with hypertension should be aware that having an influenza-like illness (ILI) is associated with an 40% increased risk of ischemic stroke paralysis regardless of sex, race, or geographical setting. The flu illness increases the risk of stroke, particularly in the first 30 days.

There is also an association between ILI and non-traumatic cervical artery dissection, a leading cause of ischemic stroke in patients ages 15 to 45 years.

All latest studies support evidence of an inflammatory trigger for stroke.

Many people with several stroke risk factors used to wonder why they suffered a stroke on a particular day rather than the day before or year before. Now it is clear that risk factors for stroke are hypertension and diabetes but they dont necessarily trigger a stroke over a specific period.
