SHIMLA: Opposing the state government decision to charge Rs 5 lakh bank guarantee for masters and specialized medical courses, resident doctors observed two hours Pen Down strike at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital on Monday, from 9 am to 11 am. Doctors created awareness about Swine Flu among people and also participated in blood donation while on strike.

For last one week, resident doctors had been working in the wards wearing black badges. Resident Doctors Association president Dr Ajay Jaryal said that he has met Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on the issue of bank guarantee; however, they have only received assurances from him. He further said that the government is misleading resident doctors on the issue of bank guarantee since for the last one year, the same has not been eliminated. He also mentioned that doctors cannot pay the bank guarantee as the amount is too high and instead, the government should consider the filling up of bonds.

Earlier, the bank guarantee being submitted by the doctors for post graduate and specialized medical courses was Rs 10 lakh, but it was reduced to Rs 5 lakh.
