The purpose of a new study published in the Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease was to assess the prevalence of unreported vulvovaginal symptoms. This study recruited women aged 18 to 84 years who had not been diagnosed with vulvovaginitis or vulvodynia in the past year. Participants were anonymously surveyed about prevalence and severity of vulvar and vaginal symptoms of itching, burning, irritation, vaginal discharge, vaginal dryness, and vulvovaginal pain over the past month. The findings revealed that 39.3% of the respondents reported one or more moderate-severe symptoms. Meanwhile, symptomatic women were younger and more likely to report a history of asthma, eczema or seasonal allergies or a previous diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis or yeast than asymptomatic women. Premenopausal women reported similar predisposition to moderate-to-severe symptoms as postmenopausal women. Moreover, symptoms frequently or always interfered with both, their interest in sex as well as ability to have sex. Hence, it was inferred that moderate-to-severe vulvovaginal symptoms are prevalent in both, premenopausal and postmenopausal women and that these symptoms have a significant impact on the sexual health of women.
