Portulaca oleracea L. is known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer as well as antioxidant properties. Recently, a double-blind randomized clinical trial, published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine, assessed the protective effects of P. oleracea cream on nipple fissure. Overall, 86 lactating women with nipple fissure were randomized into two groups: 43 in P. oleracea cream group and 43 in lanolin ointment group. The score of nipple fissure was measured with the help of the Stour scale before the intervention and on the 3rd and 8th day after the study. P. oleracea cream decreased the mean score of fissure on the 3rd and 8th days. According to the Mann-Whitney test, comparing the mean score of the fissure between the groups, the two groups were homogeneous before the intervention; however, a significant difference was noted on the 3rd and 8th days. The recovery process occurred faster in the P. oleracea cream group. The use of P. oleracea cream was found to hasten the repair of nipple fissure without any complications. This cream could thus be used as an accelerator for improving nipple fissures in lactating women.
