MUMBAI: A 27-year-old pregnant woman, whose fetus was diagnosed with severe cardiac anomalies after the permissible limit of 20 weeks for abortion, underwent medical termination of pregnancy at 27 weeks of gestation at a private hospital in the city, following the Bombay High Court’s approval.

Of the 60 women who have moved courts over the past 3 years to seek permission for abortion beyond the permissible limit of 20 weeks, she is only the second one to undergo a termination of pregnancy at a private hospital, said gynecologist, Dr Nikhil Datar, who performed the procedure.

The Court allowed the woman to choose between the state-run JJ Hospital and a private hospital of her choice. She underwent the procedure at Cloudnine Hospital in Malad.

The woman lives in Malaysia and flew down to Mumbai for a second opinion from Indian doctors after the doctors in Malaysia told her that her fetus had anomalies. (TNN)
