Women who gain excess weight during pregnancy at risk of severe complications
Women who gain more weight than recommended during pregnancy i.e. 1–19 lbs above or 20 lbs or more above the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations are at a increased risk of severe maternal morbidity such as eclampsia, heart failure during a procedure, pulmonary edema or acute heart failure, transfusion, and ventilation, according to a study published March 1, 2019 in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
