Nagpur: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has released a Health Manifesto ahead of the general elections. IMA has opposed some of the ideas of the government such as Health and Wellness Centers (HWC); however, it has decided to provide enough MBBS doctors if the government continues with the implementation of the same.

Dr Santanu Sen, National President of IMA, said in an official statement that the idea of HWCs must be reconsidered. If established, only MBBS graduates should be appointed at the centers. He mentioned that MBBS doctors are willing to work in rural areas and IMA can assist with the availability of manpower to the centers. He added that a board should be in place for the recruitment of MBBS graduates for this purpose.

The Central Government has decided to establish 1.5 lakh HWCs across the country. Due to shortage of MBBS doctors, the government has decided to appoint AYUSH doctors. The IMA is; however, against the move.

The 15-point manifesto says that unscientific mixing of treatment systems should not be encouraged. It asks to annul the bridge course to prevent the creation of a separate class of doctors. It also demands a strong policy and legislation regarding unauthorized treatments.

Dr Sen, who is also the Chairman of the Health Manifesto Committee of IMA, said that IMA has branches in 29 states and 4 Union Territories with more than 3,25,000 doctors as direct members and 5 lakh indirect members. If a proper policy and recruitment board is formed, the problem of shortage of MBBS doctors can end, he said.

IMA has raised other issues as well, such as increasing public health expenses, capping fee of private medical colleges, and single window clearance for laws and regulations for healthcare establishments.

A countywide campaign, called ‘Health First’ will be launched to promote this manifesto among the candidates, political parties and the general public. IMA Nagpur branch is also set to organize public meetings and seminars and invite candidates contesting the Lok Sabha elections. (TNN)
