Childhood onset inflammatory bowel disease IBD is associated with an increased risk of any cancer especially gastrointestinal cancers both in childhood and later in life suggests a study published online September 21 in the BMJ. Hazard ratios for any cancer were 2.6 in ulcerative colitis and 1.7 in Crohn s disease. The hazard ratio for gastrointestinal cancers was 18.0.
