The purpose of a new study published in Medicine was to determine the relationship between vitamin D intervention and glycemic control in patients with T2D. This literature review and meta-analysis selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from inception of databases through March 2018. Overall, 19 RCTs were included. The results revealed that when compared to controls, subjects who received short-term vitamin D supplementation had a decline in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), insulin resistance, and insulin. Whereas, there were no significant differences between the two groups on long-term follow-up after vitamin D intervention. From the findings, it was inferred that vitamin D supplementation in T2D patients can improve HbA1c, insulin resistance, and insulin in short-term intervention, and that it can be considered as an adjunctive therapeutic measure in the management of T2D.
