A new article published in Reviews in Medical Microbiology projected that the number of individuals affected with diabetes mellitus (DM) globally, is expected to rise up to 600 million by the year 2045, from being 425 million at present. This article was based on a review, the findings of which suggested that although DM is classified among noncommunicable diseases, evidence hints towards the role of microbes—viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitic and prion-like, both as infectious agents associated with the diabetic status and as possible causative factors for DM. Additionally, genetics and metabolic changes predispose diabetes patients to infections. Over a life time, the enhanced susceptibility of people with diabetes to infections tends to expose them to a substantial consumption of antimicrobials, thus, facilitating drug-resistance. Meanwhile, poorly identified biologic agents may participate in the pathogenic processes that lead to DM. It was stated that it is crucial to identify environmental factors that play an etiologic or triggering role in the pathogenesis of DM. In inference, the authors stated that future interventions should target environmental factors and infections that cause or induce diabetes.
