Introduction to Whole Grains and Human Health

A new article published in Whole Grains and their Bioactives reported that existing scientific literature indicates that the consumption of whole grains has beneficial effects on the maintenance of human health of individuals of all age-groups. Studies have shown that the consumption of whole grains as part of a balanced diet decreases the incidence of coronary heart disease and many other chronic diseases, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancers, apart from promoting gastrointestinal tract regularity and function. The authors stated that whole grains provide unique and efficacious profiles of dietary bioactive compounds that influence human health beyond basic nutrition. Researchers have described different types of dietary bioactives in whole grains as well as other plant foods, which work synergistically to promote health.
