Results of a study presented at Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases 2017 in Orlando Florida show that alvimopan had a statistically significant benefit as prophylaxis against post operative ileus after bowel resection in patients with inflammatory bowel disease as it effectively accelerated the time to bowel recovery. The perioperative use of alvimopan also reduced hospitalization duration.
