Tranexamic acid: An effective option with a favorable safety profile for reducing blood loss in open myomectomy

A meta analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety profiles of tranexamic acid for reducing blood loss and transfusion requirements in patients undergoing open myomectomy surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus . A total of 4 trials comprising 328 patients met the inclusion criteria. The results showed that there were significant differences between groups in terms of total blood loss postoperative hemoglobin level transfusion requirements and duration of surgery. In addition no adverse effect was documented in treatment groups. It was thus concluded that administration of tranexamic acid in open myomectomy helps in significantly reducing total blood loss postoperative hemoglobin duration of surgery and transfusion requirements.
