A randomized double blind multicenter study compared the effects of azilsartan and valsartan in 984 patients with primary hypertension using ambulatory and clinic blood pressure BP measurements. The primary end point was change in 24 hour mean ambulatory systolic BP from baseline value after 24 weeks of treatment. The mean age of participants was 58 years. Baseline 24 hour mean systolic BP was similar approximately 145.6 mm Hg in each group. The reduction in 24 hour mean systolic BP 14.9 mmHg and 15.3 mmHg respectively with azilsartan 40 mg and 80 mg was more than that seen with valsartan 320 mg 11.3 mmHg . Clinic systolic BP reductions were consistent with ambulatory results 14.9 mmHg with azilsartan 40 mg and 16.9 mmHg with azilsartan 80 mg vs 11.6 mmHg for valsartan . The reductions in 24 hour mean and clinic diastolic BPs were greater with both azilsartan doses compared with valsartan. Azilsartan thus demonstrated superior efficacy to valsartan at its maximal recommended dose without any significant increase in adverse events. Azilsartan could therefore provide better hypertension control compared with other ARBs in the class. The findings are published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension Greenwich .
