A senior casualty medical officer working at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) was allegedly attacked by four attendants of a patient on Monday early morning.

Medical officer Dr. K. Anvesh said at a press conference on Monday afternoon that he was on night duty at the emergency ward on Sunday. A patient called C. Nikhil was admitted at the emergency ward around 4.30 a.m. He said that the patient had head injuries in a drunk driving accident case.

Dr. Anvesh was attacked for carrying out a CT scan of a road accident victim C. Nikhil. According to hospital sources, the attendants were in a drunken state and were frantic and threatening doctors and nurses. A senior official said that the patient had a head injury and a CT scan was done. The attendants were demanding that the reports should be given immediately.

The police said that the drunken men abused, punched and tried to strangulate Dr. Anvesh. Dr. Anvesh somehow managed to escape and his fellow doctors took him to another room in a shocked state. Despite the commotion, the doctors and the staff treated Nikhil, who regained consciousness after two hours.

A duty resident doctor, Dr. Anees Fathima, had lodged a complaint with the police alleging that the attendants manhandled Dr. Anvesh and abused the hospital staff. On the complaint, cases were registered under Indian Penal Code Section 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) read with Section 32, said Panjagutta sub-inspector D. Nagaraju.

NIMS Resident Doctors’ Association members staged a protest against the alleged attack, later on Monday. A member of the association, Dr. Srinivas, have demanded strict punishment for the accused attendants.

In the past three months, this is the second assault on NIMS doctors. On 1st March 2019, a medical graduate at the institute was attacked by a patient’s attendants.
