On Thursday, the Indian Medical Association’s (IMA) local chapter called upon a meeting of its members in a case of an extortion call made to a doctor on July 7, as the police continue trying to detect the criminals who had made it. On Wednesday, the doctor also alleged of facing firing shots near a nursing-home at Baradwari.

On July 7, Dr S. K Kundu, an oncologist had received an unknown phone call seeking a ransom of Rs 5 lakh.

IMA’s Jamshedpur unit president Mrityunjay Singh said the meeting was called to criticize yesterday’s incident and demand security for doctors in the city. Singh also pointed out that they would need to discuss the steps with the police administration in this matter of Dr Kundu.

IMA president, who is posted at the MGM Medical College Hospital, said that, the incident has spread panic among the medical fraternity. The criminals showed Dr Kundu a toy-gun, which the police too accepted having seen the CCTV footage. The official said that the same gang of criminals can also swoop over Dr Kundu with real gun.

Singh demanded for enough security to the doctors and regretting saying that the doctor’s community have become a soft target. The IMA has said if things continue to move this way, then it would be difficult for doctors to perform their duty fearlessly. Strong protest against the incident was also made.

In the meantime, the police are trying to detect the elements involved in making the extortion call and consequent alleged firing depending heavily on the CCTV footage. Superintendent of police (City) Subhash Chandra Jat, said that they have almost identified the criminals involved in both the incidents – making extortion call and showing toy-gun to the same doctor. They are scanning the CCTV footage for determining the criminals.

Jat also said that there was no firing not even from a toy-gun, but they have found from the CCTV footage that one of the two bike-borne criminals was carrying a toy-gun.
