A new article published in the Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America discussed that food allergy and allergic rhinitis are childhood diseases with special relevance to the pediatric otolaryngologist. The authors stated that most diagnoses of food allergy can be made on history alone while strict avoidance of sensitizing agents is the mainstay treatment. Additionally, skin prick testing and serum-specific IgE testing play an important role in allergic rhinitis diagnosis. In a majority of the cases, if pharmacotherapy fails, allergen immunotherapy is an option. The article reported that currently, intense investigation on diagnostic tests, novel treatments and prevention strategies exist, which could dramatically affect the way these diseases are identified and managed.
