On Monday, the family of a 56-year-old brain-dead farmer donated his vital organs, including kidney and liver, for the use of two patients battling end-stage liver and kidney disease.

The farmer, a resident of Tasgaon in Sangli district, had suffered bleeding inside the brain, medically known as intra-cerebral haemorrhage, three days before and was admitted to the Ruby Hall Clinic.

AartiGokhale, transplant coordinator of Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC), Pune branch, told TOI, that in spite of putting in best efforts, doctors could not resuscitate him and hence was declared brain-dead on August 11. His family members gave their consent for organ donation afterthe hospital staff approached them.

Gokhale said that as they got family’s consent for the donation, doctors retrieved one of his kidneys and the liver, which were suitable for the transplant. Both his organs have been successfully transplanted into two patients who were suffering from end-stage kidney and liver failure.

The committee, a registered body with the charity commissioner, is formed by the appropriate authority through a government resolution. There are four ZTCCs in Maharashtra, including Pune and promotes cadaver organ transplant.

In Pune, three hospitals have the license to perform heart transplants. Nine more hospitals have sought the license to perform liver transplants and a total of 18 hospitals have the license to perform kidney transplants. Only, a few of these hospitals perform multiple organ transplants.
