A randomized study was performed in women with prelabor preterm rupture of the membranes PPROM between 26 and 36 weeks gestation to find out whether the use of amoxicillin clavulanic acid as prophylactic therapy prolongs gestation and reduces neonatal and maternal morbidity due to sepsis. The candidates were randomly allocated to receive either a course of prophylactic amoxicillin clavulanic acid n 84 or no prophylactic antibiotic treatment n 87 . The results demonstrated that prophylactic amoxicillin clavulanic acid group had a significantly longer latency period between rupture of membranes and delivery. Moreover there was a trend towards increased neonatal and maternal morbidity due to sepsis in the no treatment group. It was thus concluded that administration of prophylactic amoxicillin clavulanic acid in PPROM significantly prolongs gestation. In addition it may also reduce neonatal and maternal morbidity due to sepsis.
