Skin microbiota: Friend or foe in pediatric skin health and skin disease.

A new article published in Pediatric Dermatology presented a review that focusedon key studies conducted within the pediatric population and provided a framework for future skin microbiome studies. Thisstudy explored the skin microbiome at birth and reviewed the impact of the mode of child birth on infant skin colonization. It also informed on the evolution of the skin microbial colonization from infancy to adulthood and the impact of normal development on the abundance of skin commensals such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and Cutibacterium. The review included several skin microbiome research studies in common pediatric skin conditions, which encompassed body odor, atopic dermatitis (AD)and acne. Furthermore, it explored various bacteria genera that predominate children and adults with AD and the impact of current AD therapies on the skin microbiota. In addition, the review involvedgaining an understanding of the contribution of Cutibacterium to acne pathogenesis and the impact of acne therapies on the skin microbial communities.
