Relatives of a newborn baby have alleged medical negligence by the radiologist and diagnostic center, alleging that they failed to identify defects in the baby. The family was shocked after the child was born with the deformity of an underdeveloped limb, even though the reports provided by the center, stated that the baby was healthy. The family has complained to the director of health services, who has started inquiry based on the complaint.

According to the upset father’s complaint, the girl child was born on October 30 at the Mai Mangeshkar Hospital and it was found that her right leg below the knee was underdeveloped. The father, a teacher and resident of Ambegaon, complained to the deputy director of health services against the radiologist Dr Shriyesh Jaiswal of Nucleus Diagnostics, Sinhagad Road branch, demanding strict action.

The distressed father claimed that all prenatal tests like sonography, anomaly tests, etc., were done by them at Nucleus Diagnostics and none of them ever told or informed that there was any deformity. The reports said that the ‘fetal limbs appear normal and both hands and feet were visualized. Even the radiologist in his reports stated, ‘no obvious congenital abnormality is seen at present. Fetal heart, spine, head, stomach, both kidneys, bladder, hands and feet are normal’. The doctors and the center have committed a gross medical negligence and will have a lasting impact on the child.

The father alleged that from the reports and after the delivery it is clear that the baby had deformity and the doctors had failed to detect it. Due to the medical negligence committed by the doctors the entire family is suffering now. If the radiologist had done the tests without negligence, this problem would not have occurred.

Dr Nitin Bilolikar, deputy director of health services, said that he has received the complaint and the required action will be taken soon. He said that the father had given a written complaint. They have issued orders to investigate the issue with the PMC health chief and further action will be taken based on the findings.

The newborn’s mother said that they trusted the doctors and went for the tests, but had disappointed them. Strict action should be taken against the guilty.

When Mirror contacted Jaiswal, he said that he was unable to comment on this matter as he is out of town. The owner of Nucleus Diagnostics, Dr Abhijeet Pawar, said that the whole record of the patient need to be rechecked and evaluated to seewhat went wrong.
