Two doctors held for sex determination tests in Hyderabad

On Thursday, a sex determination racket was busted and three persons, including two doctors of a private hospital in Attapur were arrested in Hyderabad.

A complaint was lodged by Rangareddy district medical & health office (DMHO) officials and Chaitanyapuri police busted the racket and arrested two doctors — Sarala and Ayesha Fatima — of Ushodaya Hospital, Attapur, and an auto-rickshaw driver, Anjaneyulu.

According to police, DMHO officials were angled off that Anjaneyulu and a few others acted as agents in helping the couples who wanted to know sex of their unborn child.

Anjaneyulu used to take the interested pregnant women to Sarala and Fatima of Ushodaya Hospital, where they reportedly conducted sex determination tests. After nabbing Anjaneyulu, upon his confession, Chaitanyapuri police went to Ushodaya Hospital and confronted the other two doctors about the allegations of conducting sex determination tests.

Chaitanyapuri inspector R Saidulu told TOI that the two doctors confessed that they performed sex determination tests. They found three women on whom the tests were performed earlier. Anjaneyulu had been collecting Rs 9,000 from each patient for the sex determination test. Anjaneyulu and his associates used to take Rs 6,000 and the remaining Rs 3,000 were given to the doctors.

Police have arrested the three accused under Sections 420, 406 of the IPC and Section 23 of The Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostics Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Determination) Act. The officials are yet to discover for how long the accused are been committing the crime.
