On Friday, many city-based doctors expressed their concern over the increasing incidents of juvenile diabetes and congenital hypothyroidism (CH) in infants during the inauguration of 6th Biennial Conference in Kolkata by Indian Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology (ISPAE). The conference will be held in the city till December 1, where renowned doctors from across the country and abroad are participating. This will be the first time that such a robust conference of ISPAE is taking place in the city.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Subrata Dey, head of the department of Pediatric Endicrinology in a private hospital in the city, said that the congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is found in 1 out of 2000 live births. The disease should be detected in the infants within two weeks of their birth. If it is detected late, the newborn can suffer mental retardation. The diagnosis should be done early and treatment should be started for optimum growth. Growth hormone deficiency and hypothyroidism are treatable but type 1 diabetes mellitus is increasing and requires insulin therapy. Few new advancement in diagnosis management and technology can help these children to lead a normal lives.

CH is caused due to the inadequate thyroid hormone production in newborn infants and can occur due to an anatomic defect in the gland or due to an inborn defect of thyroid metabolism, or iodine deficiency. It is the most common neonatal endocrine disorder. The doctors says that obesity is on the rise among the children which is a major cause of concern. A balanced diet, including exercise and life style changes, one can manage diabetes. The ISPAE conferences includes the discussion on the latest advances in this field, interactive sessions and management oriented lectures to provide the delegates with the ideal platform for information exchange and discussion.
