Three drugs commonly used in the emergency department to treat patients with refractory status epilepticus were equally effective and safe, revealed the ESETT trial.
Each of the three medications -- levetiracetam (Keppra), fosphenytoin (Cerebyx), and valproate (Depacon) -- stopped seizures and improved responsiveness in about half of patients with benzodiazepine-refractory status epilepticus, reported researchers in the New England Journal of Medicine. Safety outcomes were similar for all three drugs.
